Koh Lanta is one of Thailand’s most beautiful islands, located just off the coast of Krabi. Its long coastline has nearly a dozen beaches, some considered the finest in the country, and each one with its own charm and atmosphere. It is a trulyidyllic island, with plenty of beautiful uncrowded beaches, fishing villages, waterfalls, and jungles. As is the case with other islands the tourist season in KoLanta runs from October throughApril with the most visitors arrivingNovember to March. An increasing number of people are visitingin green season (May to October) when dailyrainfall usually onlylasts a few hours.
There is no airport on the island, so the best way to travel there is to fly to Krabi, then drive south to Koh Lanta. Another option would be to reach Koh Lanta by ferry from Krabi, Phuket or Koh Phi Phi.
The “capital” of the island is Baan Saladan. The village is located on the northwest end of islandwhich iswhere most tourists arriveby passenger and car ferries. Near this village is Klong Dao Beach, the first ofthe seven different beaches that run down the west coast. Facilities include vehicle or bike rental, dive shops, banks and shopping outlets. Saladan also has a medical center and a few larger markets for food and souvenirs.
At the north of Koh LantaYai, Klong Dao is one of the busiest and most popular beaches of Koh Lanta. Stretching for three and a half kilometers, there are many beachside accommodations to choose from, along with an assortment of small shops, restaurants, and bars just a short stroll from the sands. The wide beach is good for sunbathing at any time of the day and the waters are shallow with few rocks, making it ideal for families.
The longest beach on Koh Lanta is PhraAe (Long Beach). The water here is beautiful, but not as gently sloping as the Klong Dao Beach. There are a few nice hotels on this beach along with smaller resorts with good quality bungalow accommodation. The north of this beach has a wide variety of restaurants and bars which makes it a lively destination at night whereas the southern end tends to have small intimate resorts. More bars and restaurants are to be found on the main road.
KlongKhong Beach is a 3 kilometre stretch of beautiful soft sand fringed with palm trees in the middle of Koh Lanta. The area is a bit less developed and more peaceful than the neighboring beaches. KlongKhong is a great place to watch the sunset and at night many bars have their own fire shows and parties.
The beaches in the south of the island are much smaller and more crescent-shaped than the ones in the north. One of the most beautiful beaches on this island is Kantiang Beach, commonly referred to as a secluded paradise. Located 45 min drive from Baan Saladan, it is a much quieter, more secluded beach than Klong Dao or PhraAe. Kantiang Bay is most famous as the location of Pimalai Resort, Koh Lanta’s first luxury hotel. There are now several other hotels, resorts and villas in the area. Kantiang Bay creates a perfect crescent shape to keep the Andaman Sea flat calm with crystal clear water. Looking up from the beach beyond the road, you will see the mountain range which provides breathtaking scenery around the bay. Even on a busy day you may find yourself sharing the beach with only a handful of people. It’s a perfect choice for honeymooners and couples who want peace and quiet and get away from the crowds.
