Koh Chang

Koh Chang (which translates as “Elephant Island”) is the second largest island in Thailand (after Phuket). It isthe main island of an archipelago consisting of 54 islands. It is located approximately 320 km south-east from Bangkok in Trat province, near the border with Cambodia. Koh Chang is one of Thailand's most beautiful islands with long white sandy beaches, clear waters and rainforest blanketing high hills. Its popularity as a tourist destination has been rising over the past few years, but it is far from overdevelopment unlike some other islands in Thailand.

Apart from the long sandy beaches, blue waters and green hillsKoh Chang's main attraction is its laid back pace of life. Some 80 percent of the island’s interior is covered with pristine rainforest. There is basically only one road running close to the coast. Koh Chang only has around 5000 permanent residents but this number continues to grow as this tropical island is quicklybecoming more popular with tourists.

The clear waters, reefs, and small islands surrounding Koh Chang are a favorite destination for scuba divers, snorkelers, sport fishermen, and kayakers.Koh Chang archipelago’s waters conceal three shipwrecks, the best known if which is HTMS Koh Chang.

Most of the best beaches are located on the western coast of the island, the best being Hat Sai Khao Beach (“White Sands Beach”), KlongPraoBeach, Kai BaeBeach and Lonely Beach.

Hat Sai Khaois the longest and most popular beach on Koh Chang. Its beautiful white sands and clear blue waters stretch across 2.5 kilometers and are lined by hotels, restaurants, palm trees with picturesque rain forest in the distance. The main road behind the beach is packed with restaurants, shops, bars, cafes. The main feature of this beach are daily picturesque sunsets.

KlongPraoBeach is a beautiful, long white sandy beach a few kilometers to the south of White Sand Beaach. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, it is ideal for bathing and all types of non-motorized water activities, including canoeing and kayaking to the adjacent islands of Koh Yuak and Koh Pli – perfect locations for snorkeling.KlongPrao Beach is home to a few higher-end resorts like Emerald Cove Resort or Koh Chang Paradise Resort. The beach is divided in to three sections by the river estuary from KlongPlu waterfall. Much quieter than Hat Sai KhaoKlongPrao is ideal for those who appreciate tranquil surroundings, gorgeous scenery and sandy beaches.

Kai Bae Beach is situated to the south of KlongPrao and boasts a 2-kilometre stretch of sandy beach. Kai Bae is busier than KlongPrao but the main road is much narrower. Kai BaeBeach offers fantastic views to some of Koh Chang's neighboring west coast islands, including Koh Yuak and Koh Pli, making the landscape very charming especially at sunset. The islands are the favorite destination for snorkeling, canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts, or for those who love isolated beaches. Kai Bae offers a wide range of accommodation suitable for any wallet, both on the beach and along the coastal road.

Lonely Beach has some stunning views of the jungle-clad mountains in the background. Most of the beach is surrounded by a rocky landscape, fringed by overhanging palm trees. Lonely Beach also known as the backpackers’paradise of Koh Chang and has a variety of accommodation, ranging from budget-friendly huts to new higher class resorts.
