60 Covid Deaths, 10,035 New Cases

11 Oct, 2021

Thailand logged 60 new Covid-19 fatalities and 10,035 new cases during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Monday morning.

On Sunday, 10,590 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Monday afternoon welcomed the dip in the death toll, which has dropped by almost half from Sept 29.

Fatalities numbered 60 in the report on Monday, down from 129 on Sept 29.

"We hope to see the figures continue to go down," CCSA assistant spokeswoman Apisamai Srirungson said.

Yala registered the highest number of deaths at eight, ahead of five in Bangkok and four in Pathum Thani.

The centre again voiced its concern over the situation in four southern border provinces — Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala — as their combined new cases of 2,185 outnumbered the new transmissions of 2,122 in Greater Bangkok, an area that includes Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon and Samut Sakhon.

"The CCSA's operation centre remains concerned (about the situation in the southern region," Dr Apisamai said.

The centre pointed to the low vaccination rate -- especially in Narathiwat and Pattani -- as a reason for the virus surge in the southern border areas, she added.

The average jab rate in the four southern provinces was 48%, but the rate in Narathiwat and Pattani was under 40%.

The 10,035 new cases announced Monday included 9,955 cases in the general population and 80 among prison inmates.

A further 39 cases were imported, 28 of them found in Thai workers coming back from Sweden. The rest were from Israel, France, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar.

The returnees from Sweden arrived in Thailand on Wednesday and were sent to a private hospital in Pathum Thani, according to the CCSA.

It did not say whether they were on the same flight as 54 Thai returnees who were also infected with the virus in the report on Sunday.

On Sunday, 110,265 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 2,969 seriously ill patients and 680 dependent on ventilators.

Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,692,056 Covid-19 patients, 1,565,477 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,720,919 Covid-19 cases, with 1,592,9023 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 17,657 during the third wave and 17,751 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom’s all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 300,477 in 24 hours to 238,647,343. The worldwide death toll went up by 4,584 to 4,867,211. The United States had the most cases at 45,204,373, up 24,694 and the most deaths at 733,575, up 517.
