27 Covid Deaths, 2,290 New Cases

There were 27 more Covid-19 fatalities and 2,290 new cases in the country over the past 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Friday morning.

There were 1,996 cases in the general population and 294 among prison inmates.

Over the past 24 hours, 5,711 Covid-19 patients were diagnosed recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 160,965 Covid-19 patients, 117,572 of whom have recovered.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 189,828 Covid-19 cases.

The death toll was at 1,308 in the third wave and 1,402 from the beginning of the pandemic early last year.

The Covid-19 Information Centre at first announced the number of new fatalities at 43 before 8am, and about 20 minutes later reduced it to 27.

The daily death toll was down from the 43 reported on Thursday and 35 on Wednesday.

Apisamai Srirangson, spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said later during the afternoon briefing that the 27 fatalities were aged from 48-94 years.

She said 17 were in Bangkok, two each in Pathum Thani and Samut Sakhon, and one each in Samut Prakan, Kanchanaburi, Kamphaeng Phet, Chai Nat, Ratchaburi and Saraburi.

The 2,290 new cases over the past 24 hours included 1,966 community infections and 30 imported cases. Bangkok had the most cases at 942.

There were 78 clusters including three new ones – 59 cases at the Worasit camp of construction workers in Laksi district, 20 cases (13 vendors and seven relatives) at Soi Lalai Sap market in Bang Rak district, and 37 cases at GPG Garment factory in Phasicharoen district.

Other provinces with many new cases included 173 in Samut Prakan (including a new cluster of 67 cases at a woollen shirt exporting company in Bang Sao Thong district), 102 cases in Nonthaburi (including 12 at Bang Yai market), 98 in Samut Sakhon, 83 in Nakhon Pathom (including 63 at a chicken factory in Sam Phran district), 70 in Songkhla (including 19 at a rubber glove factory in Sadao district), 56 in Phetchaburi (including 24 at a furniture factory in Khao Yoi district), 50 in Pathum Thani, 47 in Chon Buri and 37 cases in Chanthaburi province (including 13 cases at the Thai-Cambodian market and nearby communities in Pong Nam Ron district).

The 294 new cases among prison inmates were confirmed during repeat Covid-19 tests. The disease had not been detected by their first tests, Dr Apisamai said.

The 30 imported cases were arrivals from the United Kingdom (1), Iran (1), Saudi Arabia (15 Thai returnees), Indonesia (1), and Cambodia (12 including eight online gambling administrators arrested in Cambodia).

As of Thursday, 43,428 people were receiving treatment for Covid-19 at hospitals, including 1,287 critically ill patients and 352 dependent on ventilators.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 434,852 in 24 hours to 175.62 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 11,400 to 3.79 million. The United States had 14,880 new cases for a total of 34.27 million, the most worldwide, and 424 new fatalities for a toll of 614,007. India was second with 29.27 million cases, up 91,266, and 363,097 deaths, up 3,402.
