There were 262 more Covid-19 fatalities and 14,956 new cases recorded during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Thursday morning.

There were 14,600 cases in the general population and 356 among prison inmates. They included two overseas visitors to Phuket under the sandbox tourism programme - one from Israel and one from the UK.

On Wednesday, 17,936 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

 

 

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,234,487 Covid-19 cases, with 1,058,704 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 12,009 during the third wave and 12,103 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 262 fatalities (up from 252 the previous day) were aged 25 to 103 years and included nine Myanmar nationals, two Americans and a Norwegian.

Seventy percent of them were elderly. One was a pregnant woman in Narathiwat province in the deep South and one died before hospital admission in the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket.

Bangkok continued to log the most new deaths – 80 (unchanged) -- while a further 61 (unchanged) were reported in the adjacent provinces of Pathum Thani (24), Samut Sakhon (17), Samut Prakan (9), Nakhon Pathom (8) and Nonthaburi (3).

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 77 more deaths – in Chachoengsao (14), Chon Buri (14), Suphanburi (7), Lop Buri (7), Ang Thong (11), Nakhon Nayok (6), Kanchanaburi (4), Ayutthaya (3), Rayong (3), Ratchaburi (3), Prachin Buri (2), Phetchaburi (1), Chanthaburi (1) and Samut Songkhram (1).

The Northeast had 12 new fatalities – in Udon Thani (5), Nakhon Ratchasima (3), Khon Kaen (1), Si Sa Ket (1), Chaiyaphum (1) and Bung Kan (1).

The South reported 20 more deaths – in Yala (6), Pattani (5), Narathiwat (4), Krabi (1), Phuket (1), Ranong (1), Songkhla (1) and Surat Thani (1).

The North saw 12 new fatalities – in Tak (8), Phetchabun (2) and Phitsanulok (2).

The 14,956 new cases included 14,583 local infections and 17 imported cases.

Of the local infections, 12,361 were confirmed at hospitals and 2,222 via mass testing.

Bangkok had 3,322 new cases (down from 3,732), followed by 1,220 in Samut Prakan (down from 1,284), 881 in Chon Buri (up from 879), 733 in Samut Sakhon (down from 864), 494 in Ayutthaya (up from 492), 428 in Narathiwat (up from 313), 349 in Ratchaburi (down from 417), 341 in Nakhon Pathom (up from 161), 340 in Rayong (down from 547) and 310 in Saraburi (up from 126).

Greater Bangkok reported 6,074 new cases (down from 6,513 on Tuesday) and 141 new deaths (unchanged). Four southern border provinces had 1,069 new cases (up from 988) and 16 new fatalities (up from 13), while 67 other provinces recorded 7,440 new cases (up from 7,079) and 104 new deaths (up from 98).

The 17 imported cases were from Laos (1), Cambodia (11), Malaysia (2), Japan (1), Israel (1 visitor to Phuket) and the United Kingdom (1 visitor to Phuket).

On Wednesday 163,680 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 166,922 on Tuesday), including 4,841 seriously ill patients (down from 4,917) and 1,030 dependent on ventilators (down from 1,040).

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 680,346 (up from 607,415) in 24 hours to 219.26 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 10,415 (up from 8,938) to 4.54 million. The United States had the most cases at 40.33 million, up 184,420 (up from 156,002), and the most deaths at 659,927, up 1,480 (up from 1,232).
