Thailand’s 4-step Reopening Plan

02 Apr, 2021

Last week Thailand’s cabinet has approved plans to reopen the country to foreign tourists, but in a gradual way. The current plan is as follows:

  • As of April 1, 2021, the quarantine for visitors will be cut from 14 days to 10 days for all arrivals, apart from visitors from some African countries.
  • Travelers who are vaccinated against Covid-19 can now undergo a reduced quarantine period of 7 days upon entering Thailand. The new, shorter quarantine period went into effect on April 1 in Phuket, Krabi, Phang-nga, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya.
  • As of July 1, 2021, vaccinated tourists from low-risk countries will be able to travel to Phuket with no quarantine requirement.
  • As of October 1, 2021, the quarantine requirement will be scrapped for vaccinated tourists in Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi, Pattaya, Phang Na, and Phuket.
  • Starting January 1, 2022, Thailand plans to lift all quarantine requirements for foreign visitors.

To be eligible for the cut-down quarantine, travelers need to be inoculated with a vaccine that is approved by the World Health Organization or the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand.

The following vaccines are approved:

  • Pfizer/BioNTech (2 doses)
  • Moderna (2 doses)
  • AstraZeneca/Oxford University (2 doses)
  • CoronaVac by Sinovac (2 doses)
  • Covishield by the Serum Institute of India (2 doses)
  • Johnson & Johnson (1 dose)

What you need to enter Thailand:

  • Vaccine certificate, either a printout or the original document (only for vaccinated travelers)
  • Certificate of Entry issued by the Royal Thai Embassy
  • Covid-19 health insurance with a minimum coverage of $100,000 USD
  • Booking confirmation for an Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotel
  • Negative Covid-19 test issued no more than 72 hours before departure

Under the 7-day quarantine, travelers are still required to undergo Covid-19 testing before being released. Those on a 10-day quarantine will be tested twice and those on a 14-day quarantine will be tested 3 times.

These are just proposals at this stage, and you should check with the embassy in your country before making any flight or hotel bookings.
